How the services fit

How the restoration services fit together

Most fire recoveries follow a rough order. First the house is secured with board-up and tarping so weather and intruders cannot cause more damage. Next, water from firefighting is removed and drying begins, because wet materials can grow mold within a day or two. Then soot and smoke residue are cleaned from surfaces and contents, and finally lingering odor is treated and surfaces are sealed before repairs and repainting.

Not every fire needs every service. A small kitchen fire might need only smoke cleanup and odor treatment, while a larger fire may involve all of them plus structural repairs. When you call, describe what happened and the contractor can explain which steps apply to your home.

Choosing

What to ask about each service

For every service, ask the contractor how they decide what to clean and what to replace, how they document the work for your insurer, and how they protect rooms that were not damaged. Ask who handles related trades such as electrical, HVAC and roofing, and whether permits will be needed from Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement for the repairs. Clear answers to those questions tell you a lot about how the job will be run.
